Townsend is a small town in New Castle County, Delaware, with a population of 2,717 according to the 2020 census. Notably, the geographic center of Delaware is located within Townsend's boundaries. The town was incorporated on April 3, 1885, taking its name from Samuel John Townsend, a businessman and Delaware Democrat who, along with his brother John, purchased large tracts of farmland in the area between 1845 and 1855. Prior to its incorporation, the town was known as Charley Town. The arrival of the Delaware Railroad in 1856, which bisected Samuel Townsend's property, proved transformative for the community. The railroad station became the principal shipping point for the area's agricultural products and was subsequently named Townsend after the region's major landowners. A Post Office was established in September 1856, followed by the first hotel in 1857. The peach industry was vital to the town's growth and prosperity throughout the late nineteenth century until disease devastated many Delmarva orchards. A free African American community was established in the town by the mid-nineteenth century. Today, Townsend spans 0.6 square miles and is entirely rural. The Townsend Historic District, comprising 216 buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The town is served by Delaware Route 71 and maintains rail connections through the Delmarva Central Railroad and the Maryland and Delaware Railroad.
