The town's history is rooted in the California Gold Rush, when a group of forty-niners who had traveled the Carson-Emigrant Trail through Pleasant Valley, Nevada, established a mining camp in the area. The community received its distinctive name from a horse-drawn shingle machine capable of producing 16,000 shingles daily, which operated near the springs at the western edge of the camp. Pioneers in Shingle Springs left behind a rich collection of written records that provide detailed insights into the Gold Rush era. The post office first operated as "Shingle Spring" from 1853 to 1855, reopened as "Shingle Springs" in 1865, was renamed "Shingle" in 1895, and reverted to "Shingle Springs" in 1955. Due to this significant historical record, the town was designated California Historical Landmark #456.
Before Anglo-American settlement, the area was home to a Maidu village called Bamom. Today, the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, a federally recognized tribe of Maidu and Miwok people, maintains their headquarters in the community.
