Tubac, a census-designated place in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, sits on the Santa Cruz River and takes its name from the O'odham word Cuwak, meaning "place of dark water." With a population of 1,581 as of the 2020 census, Tubac has a rich and storied past that shaped Arizona's colonial history.
In 1752, Tubac was established as a Spanish presidio, becoming the first Spanish colonial garrison in what is now Arizona. This left Tubac abandoned, its adobe houses crumbling.
Beginning in the 1930s, Tubac transformed into an artists' colony. Painter Dale Nichols opened an art school in 1948 and restored historic buildings. By 1961, the Santa Cruz Valley Art Association formed with eighty members and founded the Tubac Festival of the Arts in 1964.
