Woodstock is a town located in both Bibb and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, straddling the northern boundary of Bibb County. Originally settled in the 1820s following a formal land grant to William Houston in 1826, the community was initially known as North Bibb before adopting its current name in 2000. The town takes its name from Woodstock, England, the ancestral home of Dr. J.U. Ray, whose ancestors had arrived in America at Jamestown, Virginia. As of the 2020 census, Woodstock had a population of 1,472.
The town's history is deeply rooted in Alabama's industrial development. Established along the old Tuscaloosa to Huntsville stagecoach line, Woodstock became a thriving railroad hub in the nineteenth century. Dr. Ray built the first depot in 1870 for the Alabama-Chattanooga Railroad, and the town subsequently served as a break and storage yard for coal, iron ore, and cotton as multiple railroad lines operated depots there. In 1872, Giles Edwards relocated from Tannehill and constructed a blast furnace for manufacturing pig iron, later joined by his son-in-law James W. McQueen, who eventually became president of Sloss-Sheffield Iron Company in Birmingham. At its peak, as many as eight trains daily stopped in Woodstock. Beyond mining and railroads, the town also developed a jug factory utilizing local fire clay deposits for producing bricks, jugs, pots, and churns. The town was incorporated in 1996 as North Bibb before officially changing its name back to Woodstock on October 1, 2000.
