Alabaster, a southern suburb of Birmingham in Shelby County, Alabama, has grown from a small mining community into the 16th largest city in the state, with a population of 33,284 according to the 2020 census. The city's origins trace back to the mining operations of George L. Scott Sr., who owned and operated Alabaster Lime Co., extracting alabaster from the large body of high-calcium limestone beneath the town. His shipping point, known as Scott Rock, eventually developed into worker housing that formed the foundation of the community.
Alabaster's formal incorporation came on February 23, 1953, following an initial failed attempt the previous year. The successful vote counted 79 in favor to 23 opposed, with 427 residents. George L. Scott Jr., son of the original mine operator, became the city's first mayor after serving as president of the First Bank of Alabaster, which opened in 1952. The Water and Gas Board was established in 1955. In 1971, Alabaster merged with the neighboring community of Siluria, which had incorporated in 1954, consolidating communities that had maintained ties since 1950 when Alabaster was served by Siluria's post office.
Today, Alabaster continues to develop, with significant expansion plans announced for the Main Street Medical Mile along Highway 31 and a major retail complex called District 31 at the corner of Highway 31 and Interstate 65.
