Ardmore is the county seat of Carter County, Oklahoma, located ninety miles equidistant from both Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth at the junction of Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 70. Situated on the eastern margin of the Healdton Basin, one of America's most oil-rich regions, Ardmore began in the summer of 1887 as a plowed ditch for a Main Street in the Chickasaw Nation, owing much of its early growth to the Santa Fe Railroad's construction through the area. After a devastating fire in 1895 destroyed much of the town, residents rebuilt nearly entirely. By the early 1900s, Ardmore earned recognition as the world's largest inland cotton port due to its abundant cotton-growing fields. The discovery of the Healdton Oil Field in 1913 transformed the city into an energy center, with Carter County becoming Oklahoma's largest oil-producing county, a distinction it maintains today. The region's natural wealth fostered major energy companies including Noble Energy. Ardmore's history includes significant disasters: a 1915 railroad explosion killed forty-three people and prompted establishment of the city's first fire department, a 1966 plane crash killed eighty-three, and tornadoes struck in 1995 and 2009. The city also hosted minor league baseball for decades, with teams capturing championships in 1923, 1925, and 1957, and produced Hall of Fame player Carl Hubbell.
