Arlington is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, with a rich history spanning nearly two centuries. European settlement in the area dates back to the 1840s, following an 1841 battle between Texas General Edward H. Tarrant and Native Americans near Village Creek. A trading post established at Marrow Bone Spring attracted farmers to the region's fertile soil, and by the late nineteenth century, agriculture-related businesses flourished. Arlington was officially founded in 1876 along the Texas and Pacific Railway and named after General Robert E. Lee's Arlington House in Virginia. The city incorporated on April 21, 1884, and quickly developed as a cotton-ginning and farming center, offering water, electricity, natural gas, and telephone services by 1910.
The 1920s and 1930s brought notoriety to Arlington as a center of illegal gambling and speakeasies, earning it the nickname "Vegas before Vegas." Top O' Hill Terrace operated as a secret casino with escape tunnels, while nearby speakeasies served the traveling public. In 1929, Arlington Downs opened as a horse-racing track, and in 1933 became the first legal parimutuel betting location in Texas. The track drew over 6,700 visitors daily before gambling laws changed in 1937.
World War II sparked significant population growth and industrialization. A General Motors assembly plant arrived in 1954, launching automotive and aerospace development that gave Arlington one of the nation's highest growth rates between 1950 and 1990.
