Armada is a small village located in northern Macomb County, Michigan, about eighteen miles north of Mount Clemens. With a population of 1,684 as of the 2020 census, it sits within Armada Township in a rural setting where the East Branch of Coon Creek flows through the village center. The area's history stretches back to 1825, when John Proctor made the first recorded land purchase. By 1832, enough families had settled in the region that residents organized Armada Township, separating from Ray Township by a vote that won by just two votes. According to legend, the township's distinctive name came when Hosea Northrup stood up and shouted "Armada" during the naming discussion. The village itself was founded in 1833 by Elijah Burke and was initially called Burke's Corners. When it was officially incorporated in the late 1860s, it took the name of the township. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Armada developed into a thriving community with diverse businesses and services, including hotels, grocery stores, hardware stores, doctors, and an opera house. The village demonstrated commitment to education by securing Carnegie Foundation grants to build the Armada Free Public Library in 1915, which continues serving residents today. The Michigan Air Line Railway once connected Armada to other Michigan cities through a depot at the foot of Church Street. Today, Armada is perhaps best known for its annual Armada Fair and was selected as the "Nicest Place in Michigan" by Reader's Digest in 2019.
