St. Clair Shores is a city in Macomb County located roughly fourteen miles northeast of downtown Detroit and situated along the shores of Lake St. Clair. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 58,874. The area was inhabited by French settlers as early as 1710, when it was known as L'anse Creuse, and remained largely rural and agricultural into the early twentieth century, populated by French and German immigrant families whose surnames persist in the community today. The township underwent several administrative changes before becoming incorporated as a village in 1925 and finally achieving city status in 1951 following years of effort by residents.
Beginning around the First World War, St. Clair Shores developed into a popular destination for tourists and became notably involved in rum-running during Prohibition, its lakefront location and proximity to Canada making it an advantageous haven for such activities. The community was also home to Jefferson Beach Amusement Park, which operated from 1927 until 1959 as a major regional attraction featuring the longest roller coaster in the United States at the time, along with a dance pavilion and sandy beach. After a fire in 1955 damaged the park and public tastes shifted, the remaining structures were eventually demolished by 1959 to make way for Jefferson Beach Marina. Following the Second World War, St. Clair Shores experienced rapid suburban growth and became the fastest-growing suburb of Detroit during the 1950s as numerous subdivisions were developed throughout the area.
