Selfridge Air National Guard Base, located in Harrison Township near Mount Clemens in Macomb County, carries a distinguished history rooted in American aviation. The base is named after First Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge, who made headlines as the first person killed in a powered aircraft crash on September 17, 1908, while flying with Orville Wright at Fort Myer, Virginia. Selfridge had been detailed for aeronautical duty in April 1908 after serving as an assistant to Alexander Graham Bell during his aeronautical experiments in Nova Scotia.
The base itself originated in 1916 when the Packard Motor Car Company acquired lakefront property on Lake St. Clair, spurred by company president Henry B. Joy's passion for aviation. After the United States entered World War I on April 7, 1917, efforts successfully lobbied to establish a military airfield at the site. In May 1917, Joy Aviation Field was officially announced as one of only nine military airfields in the country and one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after American entry into the war. The Army leased 640 acres, and construction proceeded rapidly. The first training aircraft arrived on July 9, 1917, and actual pilot training began six days later under Captain Byron Q. Jones. During that first summer, 72 men earned aviator ratings and logged over 3,700 flying hours combined. By July 1918, the base had expanded to include a gunnery school with over 250 students and saw 52 planes aloft simultaneously on occasion. Today, Selfridge ANGB hosts the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard along with numerous reserve and active duty units, and houses the Selfridge Military Air Museum.
