Astor is an unincorporated community in northern Lake County, Florida, situated on the west side of the St. Johns River between Lake George and Lake Dexter. Located along State Road 40, the community had a population of 1,759 residents as of the 2020 census and is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area lies entirely within the boundaries of the Ocala National Forest and spans 2.7 square miles, with its water area including the western half of the St. Johns River and a network of canals extending over four miles and providing river access for residents.
Before European settlement, the Astor area was inhabited by Timucua natives. Early colonization efforts, including an English trading post established in 1763 and a sugar cane and orange plantation founded by Jewish immigrant Moses Elias Levy in 1822, ultimately failed due to war and disease. The community remained largely deserted until 1874, when William Backhouse Astor Jr. of the prominent New York Astor family purchased over twelve thousand acres and established a town called Manhattan, complete with a church, schoolhouse, botanical garden, hotel, and eventually a railroad. Though the Manhattan name never gained acceptance, the town flourished under Astor's patronage until his death in 1892, after which it was officially renamed in his honor. The community's prosperity declined following the 1912 Titanic sinking of John Jacob Astor IV and the subsequent sale of family interests, compounded by diminished steamboat travel. Today, Astor attracts winter visitors and outdoor enthusiasts drawn to its fishing, hunting, and boating opportunities.
