Mount Dora, a city in Lake County, Florida, is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee metropolitan statistical area. The town began in 1874 when David Simpson and his family settled the area. In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the town's first postmaster and a major real-estate developer, initially naming the village Royellou after his three children. The community was later renamed for Dora Ann Drawdy, an early settler from the mid-1880s. Lake Dora had been named after her in 1846, and when the town adopted that name in 1883, it reflected both the local geography and the area's history. The name Mount Dora also references the town's location on a plateau 184 feet above sea level.
As a popular winter retreat for hunters, fishermen, and boaters, Mount Dora grew steadily after the 1883 opening of the Alexander House hotel. The arrival of a railroad in 1887 brought further development, including an orange-packing house, fertilizer factories, and a cannery. The town was chartered in 1910 with 371 residents. During the 1920s, Mount Dora experienced significant growth, investing in public infrastructure like streetlights, water systems, and paved roads while establishing public parks and the Mount Dora Community Building.
Today, Mount Dora is known for its small-town southern charm, featuring numerous antique shops in the downtown area that overlooks Lake Dora.
