After the Seminole Wars and removal in the early 19th century, the first white settlers arrived in 1853. Clermont was founded in 1884 and named for the French birthplace of A.F. Wrotnowski, manager of the Clermont Improvement Company. The city was incorporated as a town in 1891, disbanded in 1895, and reincorporated as a city in 1916.
For much of the 20th century, the economy relied on orange and citrus groves. However, recurrent freezes and suburban development caused the groves to decline rapidly. Since 2001, the city has emerged as a notable training center for Olympic and college athletes, with the National Training Center established by Orlando Health.
