Biggs, formerly known as Biggs Station, is a small city in Butte County, California. The town was named for Major Marion Biggs, who was instrumental in the region's early development by first shipping grain by rail from the town's location. A post office was established at Biggs Station in 1871, with the name shortened to Biggs in 1884. The city was officially incorporated in 1903.
The town has deep historical roots in California's agricultural and immigrant heritage. In the 1870s, ancestors of the renowned scientist Linus Pauling migrated from Missouri to California and lived for a time in Biggs, which was then a settlement composed mostly of Germans. The town's German heritage reflected the ancestry of many early residents.
Today, Biggs remains a compact community covering 0.9 square miles. According to the 2020 census, the population stood at 1,964, representing growth from the 1,707 residents counted in 2010. The city is home to the Biggs Unified School District, which operates Biggs Elementary School, Richvale Elementary School, and Biggs High School.
