Gridley is a city in Butte County, California, located 29 miles south of Chico and 56 miles north of Sacramento. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 7,421 residents. The region was originally home to the Maidu people before Spanish and Mexican expeditions arrived in the early eighteenth century. Gridley was formally established in 1870 when the Oregon and California Railroad was constructed north from Marysville, reaching Chico on July 2 of that year. The town takes its name from George W. Gridley, a wool grower and grain farmer who was among the largest landowners in Butte County and settled a significant home ranch west of the town site in the 1850s.
The community experienced significant challenges in its early decades, with major fires nearly destroying much of Gridley in the summer of 1891 and again in July 1905. Beginning in November 1906, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emigrated to Gridley in response to an advertising campaign promoting the area as a place where crops flourished. By February 1907, the Gridley Branch was organized, and the influx continued from Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and other states. By 1908, approximately 500 LDS settlers had arrived, and in 1912 they completed their first chapel on the west corner of Sycamore and Vermont Streets, which had seating for 1,000 and was the largest LDS meetinghouse west of Salt Lake City at that time. Today, Gridley remains a vibrant farming community with California State Route 99 running through the city.
