Borger is the largest city in Hutchinson County, Texas, with a population of 12,551 at the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1926 by businessman Asa Philip "Ace" Borger and his partner John R. Miller after oil was discovered in the area. The two men purchased 240 acres near the Canadian River in March 1926, and within months the boomtown swelled to 45,000 residents drawn by the promise of oil wealth. Holmes. Ace Borger himself was killed at the post office in 1934.
The Great Depression and falling oil prices ended the boom, though the petroleum industry remained central to the town's economy. By the 1960s, Borger had become one of Texas's largest producers of oil, carbon black, and petrochemicals.
