Bradenton, the county seat of Manatee County, Florida, is home to approximately 55,698 residents according to the 2020 census and serves as a principal city in the Sarasota metropolitan area. Located along the Manatee River, downtown Bradenton features the Bradenton Riverwalk and the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, with beach communities on Anna Maria Island to its west and Sarasota to its south.
The area has a rich and complex history. A settlement of Maroons, or escaped slaves, called Angola existed in present-day Bradenton from the late 1700s until 1821, when it was attacked by Creek forces allied with Andrew Jackson. The settlement, estimated to have had 600 to 750 residents, benefited from the shallow Manatee River, which prevented US Navy vessels from navigating it. Josiah Gates, credited as the first known American settler in present-day Manatee County, arrived in January 1842 and established both a home and an inn to serve newcomers. The city itself is named after Dr. Joseph Braden, who relocated to the area in 1843 and established a sugar plantation covering 1,100 acres. During the Third Seminole War, Braden's fortified home was attacked on April 6, 1856. William I. Turner created the actual town subdivision in 1877 from land purchased the previous year. Originally misspelled as Braidentown when it applied for a post office in 1878, the town was incorporated on May 19, 1903, with A.T. Cornwell elected as its first mayor. Railroad service reached Bradenton in 1902, and a streetcar line operated briefly from late 1903 to 1906.
