Simi Valley, whose name derives from the Chumash word Shimiyi meaning the stringy, thread-like clouds characteristic of the region, has a rich layered history. The rancho changed hands in 1842 when José de la Guerra y Noriega purchased it, but drought in the 1860s devastated the family's cattle operations. By the 1880s, the De la Guerras had lost their holdings. The American pioneer period began when eastern speculator Thomas A. Scott purchased the rancho in 1865, seeking oil development opportunities. Scott sent Thomas Bard to manage the California properties, and by the late 1880s, the Simí Land and Water Company began subdividing the vast rancho into smaller ranch-size properties for American farmers and ranchers moving into the valley.
