Fillmore is a small city in California's Santa Clara River Valley in Ventura County, situated at the foot of the Topatopa Mountains. The city was founded in 1887 when the Southern Pacific Railroad extended its rail line through the valley, and it takes its name from J. A. Fillmore, a general superintendent of the company's Pacific system. Local business owners and the Fillmore Herald led a vigorous campaign that resulted in the city's incorporation in 1914.
The area's history extends far deeper. In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition, the first Europeans to venture into California's inland regions, camped near what is now Fillmore. Fray Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary with the party, had named the valley Cañada de Santa Clara. The historic downtown that grew up along Central Avenue became notable enough to serve as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood films and television shows.
Today, Fillmore remains an agricultural community famous for its orange groves, situated within Ventura County's historic farming and tree-farming belt. The city experienced significant hardship on January 17, 1994, when the Northridge earthquake struck at approximately 4:30 in the morning, making Fillmore the worst-hit community in Ventura County. Though no deaths or injuries occurred, over two hundred buildings were damaged, including about one-fifth of the historic downtown. The disaster caused an estimated fifty million dollars in property damage and losses, with sixty buildings ultimately requiring demolition. The community rebuilt most of its downtown area following the earthquake.
As of the 2020 census, Fillmore had a population of 16,419, representing a 9.4 percent increase from the 15,002 residents counted in 2010.
