Santa Paula is a city in Ventura County, California, situated in the orchards of the Santa Clara River Valley. The city proudly advertises itself as the "Citrus Capital of the World." Before European settlement, the Chumash people inhabited this area. In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition became the first Europeans to travel through the inland valley, camping near Santa Paula on August 12. The site of their arrival is now marked as California Historical Landmark No. 727. Franciscan missionaries later established an Asistencia in the region, and the town takes its name from the Catholic Saint Paula.
Nathan Weston Blanchard, considered the community's founder, purchased 2,700 acres and laid out the townsite in 1872, planting orange seedlings four years later. The area's petroleum industry took root when small oil companies owned by Wallace Hardison, Lyman Stewart, and Thomas R. Bard merged to form the Union Oil Company in 1890. The Union Oil Company Building, the company's original headquarters, now houses the California Oil Museum. Santa Paula was incorporated in April 1902 with Lewis Arthur Hardison as its first mayor.
Growth accelerated after the discovery of the South Mountain Oil Field in 1916, which continued producing through subsequent decades. The population reached 30,657 residents at the 2020 census. Today, Santa Paula remains an important center for both agriculture and energy production, with Occidental Petroleum continuing operations through its Vintage Production subsidiary.
