Brook Park is a suburban city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, located just outside Cleveland. With a population of 18,595 according to the 2020 census, it spans 7.53 square miles of entirely urban land. Brook Park gained national prominence in 2005 when twenty-one Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines Regiment, 4th Marine Division, which was headquartered in the city, were killed in combat in Iraq on August 1 and August 3. The unit ultimately lost forty-eight Marines during their deployment. The community responded with remarkable unity and patriotism. On August 5, the city government printed and distributed American flags for every household to display in their windows. Three days later, thousands of citizens from throughout Northeast Ohio gathered for a memorial service to honor the fallen and support their families, joined by national, state, and local politicians.
The city is also known for a significant land exchange negotiated in 2001 by then-Mayor Thomas J. Coyne Jr. and Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White, involving the runway extension at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The agreement ceded Brook Park land, including homes and the International Exposition Center, to Cleveland in exchange for the NASA Glenn Research Center and ten years of tax revenues from the center.
