Orange, a township in Essex County, New Jersey, has deep roots in American history. Originally incorporated as a township on November 27, 1806, from parts of Newark Township, the area traces its origins to 1666 when thirty families from Connecticut's New Haven Colony traveled by water to found a settlement on the Passayak River. Initially known as Newark Mountains, the community officially adopted the name Orange on June 7, 1780. The territory was reincorporated as a town in 1860 and as a city in 1872, though it quickly fragmented into smaller communities including South Orange, East Orange, and West Orange due to disputes over municipal costs. By 1982, Orange voted to reclassify itself as a township to benefit from federal revenue-sharing policies that favored townships.
Orange developed into an industrial center, becoming the United States' hat-making capital by the late 1800s. At its peak in 1892, twenty-one hat firms employed over 3,700 people, producing approximately 4.8 million hats annually. The city also became known for tanning and leather goods production, utilizing local hemlock trees for tannic acid.
