Colma, a small incorporated town in San Mateo County on the San Francisco Peninsula, takes its name from an Ohlone word meaning "springs." This unique distinction has earned Colma the nickname "the City of the Silent" and inspired the humorous motto, formerly featured on the city's website: "It's great to be alive in Colma." Before becoming a cemetery town, Colma developed during the nineteenth century as a collection of homes and small businesses along El Camino Real and the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad line. Early residents included Heinrich von Kempf, who relocated his wholesale nursery here in the early twentieth century and became the town's first treasurer. The community also hosted major boxing events in the early 1900s, with middleweight champion Stanley Ketchel fighting multiple bouts at the Mission Street Arena.
