Ladera is a small residential community in southern San Mateo County, situated in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains adjacent to Portola Valley. In 1944, the Peninsula Housing Association formed with an ambitious vision: to create a cooperative housing community. Members purchased the remaining 260 acres of the former ranch in 1946 and enlisted renowned landscape architect Garrett Eckbo to design the community. The name Ladera was chosen to honor the land's Spanish heritage, with ladera meaning hillside in Spanish.
The community's early decades reflected both idealistic vision and systemic barriers. Though the cooperative's founders refused to include racial restrictions, federal housing policies prevented their success, ultimately forcing the sale of the land to other developers. For decades, restrictive covenants barred residents who were not white. In November 2021, following a community petition drive, Ladera formally removed these discriminatory language from its founding documents, replacing it with a statement affirming the community's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Today, Ladera remains a family-oriented neighborhood, with the median age of 45.8 years and strong homeownership rates.
