Dallas is a major city in northern Texas with a population of 1.3 million at the 2020 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in the United States and the third-most populous in Texas. After European colonization claims by Spain and France, the territory eventually became part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas until 1836, when the Republic of Texas gained independence. In 1839, John Neely Bryan surveyed the area, and in 1841 he returned to establish a permanent settlement named Dallas. The city's name origin remains uncertain, though it was officially attributed to Vice President George M. Dallas of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dallas was formally incorporated as a city in 1856, the year after Dallas County was established following Texas's annexation by the United States in 1845.
Dallas developed into a prominent business and trading center through railroad construction and became a booming industrial city by the end of the nineteenth century. The Praetorian Building, completed in 1909, was among the first skyscrapers west of the Mississippi and marked Dallas's emergence as a major city.
