Dothan is the county seat of Houston County in southeastern Alabama, located about 20 miles west of Georgia and 16 miles north of Florida. With a 2020 population of 71,258, it ranks as Alabama's eighth-largest city and fifth-largest by area. The city is named after the biblical city of Dothan and serves as the principal city of the Dothan metropolitan area, which encompasses all of Geneva, Henry, and Houston counties and had a combined population of 151,007 in 2020. Dothan is perhaps best known as "The Peanut Capital of the World," producing and processing approximately one-fourth of the U.S. peanut crop. The city hosts the annual National Peanut Festival and serves as the main transportation and commercial hub for southeastern Alabama, southwest Georgia, and nearby portions of the Florida Panhandle.
The area's early history traces to European-American settlement in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, though most pioneers initially dismissed the sandy soil as unsuitable for farming. Nine families arrived in the early 1830s to harvest timber, establishing a settlement called Poplar Head that eventually failed. After the Civil War and Reconstruction Era, the town revived. Citizens voted to incorporate on November 11, 1885, renaming their settlement Dothan after a local clergyman's suggestion. A railroad stop arrived in 1893, bringing prosperity and enabling farmers to market their produce. When the boll weevil devastated cotton crops in the early 1900s, farmers successfully turned to peanut production. The twentieth century brought industrial development, including manufacturing plants for Sony, Michelin, and General Electric, as well as the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Generating Station. Originally part of Henry County, Dothan became Houston County's seat on May 9, 1903.
