Estero, whose name is Spanish for "estuary," is a village in Lee County, Florida, situated along the Gulf Coast between Naples and Fort Myers. Originally an unincorporated community, Estero incorporated as a village on December 31, 2014, and has since grown to a population of 36,939 as of the 2020 census. The village is part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area and is recognized as one of Florida's safest places.
The area's history is rich and distinctive. Mound Key, located in Estero Bay, served as a ceremonial center for the Calusa Indians when encountered by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s. In 1882, German homesteader Gustave Damkohler began planting mulberry trees along the Estero River, establishing the region's first agricultural ventures. In 1894, Damkohler donated property to followers of Cyrus Teed, whose Koreshan Unity movement created a utopian community based on the theory that people live inside a hollow Earth. Though the movement declined after Teed's death in 1908, the Koreshans' original 320-acre tract is now preserved as the Koreshan State Historic Site. Infrastructure development accelerated in the 1920s with the construction of the Tamiami Trail highway and two competing railroad lines, greatly improving access to the area.
