Hazel Park is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, situated as an inner-ring suburb of Detroit, roughly ten miles north of downtown. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 14,983. Incorporated as a city in 1941, Hazel Park bills itself as The Friendly City.
The area's early development was shaped by European settlement in the later nineteenth century, beginning with agriculture. In 1882, local farmers organized the community's first school, building a one-room schoolhouse in 1883. The school district was named Hazel Park School District 8 after the abundant hazelnut bushes in the area. Growth accelerated in the early twentieth century, driven largely by job expansion at the Ford Motor Company in nearby Highland Park. The electric Stephenson Line trolley provided convenient commuter access to Highland Park and Detroit. By 1924, the city had installed its first traffic light, established a post office, and created a Deputy Sheriff's office.
Post-World War II prosperity brought significant change. The return of soldiers created high housing demand, spurring construction of many bungalows that characterize the city today. In 1942, the Elias Brothers opened a diner that became franchised as Big Boy in 1952. One of the brothers, Louis Elias, served as Mayor from 1953 to 1961.
For nearly seven decades, Hazel Park was home to the Hazel Park Raceway, which opened in 1949 as a state-of-the-art thoroughbred racing facility.
