Royal Oak, located about ten miles north of downtown Detroit in Oakland County, is an inner-ring suburb with deep historical roots. The city was named in 1819 when Territorial Governor Lewis Cass, conducting a surveying expedition, encountered a large oak tree at the settlement that reminded him of the legendary Royal Oak where King Charles II of England hid after the Battle of Worcester. The city also became home to the Shrine of the Little Flower, founded by Father Charles Coughlin in the 1920s, whose prominence grew alongside his radio broadcasts before the Roosevelt administration closed his operation after World War II began.
Today, Royal Oak is a thriving community of 58,211 residents as of the 2020 census.
