Hazleton is a city in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, located in the northeastern part of the state, about 35 miles northwest of Allentown. With a population of 29,963 at the 2020 census, it is the second-most populous city in Luzerne County. The city was incorporated as a borough on January 5, 1857, and later became a city on December 4, 1891.
The area that became Hazleton held strategic importance long before European settlement, sitting at the intersection of two Native American trails: the Nanticoke path, used by the Nanticoke people during their migration to the Wyoming Valley, and the Nescopeck path, which connected the forks of the Delaware River to Nescopeck Creek and served traders, missionaries, and settlers. During the American Revolution, the region experienced conflict during the summer of 1780, when British sympathizers attacked American outposts along the Susquehanna River.
The modern town's development began in 1809 when entrepreneur Jacob Drumheller built the first structure at what would become a crucial intersection of regional roads. However, significant growth came after 1818, when anthrapite coal deposits were discovered nearby in Beaver Meadows. Engineer Ariovistus Pardee, recognizing the area's potential, purchased land in present-day Hazleton and incorporated the Hazleton Coal Company in 1836. Pardee is remembered as Hazleton's founding father for developing the town and establishing its first school and church. The discovery of coal attracted waves of immigrants, first German and Irish workers in the 1840s and 1850s, followed by Italian, Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, Slovak, and Montenegrin immigrants through the early 20th century. The anthracite coal mined here fueled American industry and helped establish the nation as a world power.
