Homewood is a city in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, situated on the southern side of Red Mountain as part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 26,414 residents across approximately 8.31 square miles. The area sits atop significant natural resources including iron, coal, and limestone deposits, and Shades Creek, part of the Cahaba River system, runs through the city.
Much of Homewood's character reflects its origins in the development of Hollywood, a former town annexed in 1929. Beginning in 1926, developer Clyde Nelson created the Hollywood subdivision with distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival and English Tudor style homes designed by architect George P. Turner. Nelson's marketing campaign promised residents they could move "Out of the Smoke Zone, Into the Ozone," encouraging Birmingham residents to relocate across Red Mountain. To support this development, Nelson established the area's first autobus line and extended natural gas service into Shades Valley. Hollywood officially incorporated as a town on January 14, 1927, before being annexed into Homewood less than three years later. The Great Depression halted further subdivision development, though the Hollywood Historic District, registered with the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, preserves 412 contributing buildings across 815 acres. Oak Grove was also annexed into Homewood in 1955.
In September 2024, Homewood voters approved transitioning from a mayor-council to a council-manager form of government, with the change taking effect in November 2025.
