Jefferson Hills is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. According to the 2020 census, the community is home to 12,424 residents. The borough's history stretches back to January 22, 1828, when it was established as Jefferson Township, named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson. In 1845, Snowden Township was formed from part of Jefferson Township. The community experienced steady growth through the nineteenth century, with populations of 1,601 in 1860, 2,066 in 1870, and 3,227 by 1880. Jefferson Township achieved first-class status in 1914 and was chartered as a borough in 1950. A significant change occurred in 1947 when Pleasant Hills seceded, reducing Jefferson's population and urbanized area. Before 1998, the borough was known simply as Jefferson.
Today, Jefferson Hills is primarily residential in nature, with approximately one-third of its area dedicated to residential purposes, predominantly single-family dwellings. Another third consists of open space and vacant ground, while the remaining land supports industrial, commercial, mining, and farming uses. The borough spans 16.6 square miles and features rolling hills and woods, with the Monongahela River forming its southeastern border. Three streams flow through the area: Peters Creek, Beam Run, and Lewis Run. The borough's geographic position along the southern border of Allegheny County places it adjacent to Pleasant Hills, West Mifflin, Clairton, West Elizabeth, and other surrounding municipalities.
