Jonestown is a city in Travis County, Texas, located nineteen miles northwest of Austin on the north shore of Lake Travis. The community was developed by brothers Warren and Emmet A. Jones in the 1930s, who recognized the opportunity created by the upcoming Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River. When the dam was completed, the area would become waterfront property along the Sandy Creek Arm and Big Devil's Hollow of Lake Travis. The Jones brothers began selling waterfront lots for fifty dollars in 1939, later raising prices to one hundred dollars and offering financing after complaints about affordability.
For decades, Jonestown remained a small settlement with fewer than one thousand residents, mostly weekend cabin owners. The city officially incorporated in 1985 as local leaders sought to encourage growth and move beyond the community's troubled past. Following incorporation, population grew rapidly from 683 in 1988 to 1,250 by 1990, though a regional real estate downturn slowed expansion. During the 1990s, several residents attempted to dissolve the city due to concerns about taxes and ordinances, but others opposed dissolution, fearing Austin might annex the territory.
In 1996, Jonestown expanded its borders through annexation. By 1999, the city had grown to 1,500 residents, and median home prices in the Lake North area had risen sixty-two percent in five years. Population continued increasing, reaching 1,681 by 2000 and 1,834 by 2010. As of the 2020 census, Jonestown had 2,365 residents.
