Lakeway is a city in Travis County, Texas, located sixteen miles west of Austin in the Greater Austin area. Situated next to Lake Travis, the city has experienced significant growth since its founding. The population reached 19,189 at the 2020 census, nearly doubling from the 11,391 residents counted in 2010. Spanning 13.37 square miles, Lakeway features Hurst Creek running through it, which empties directly into Lake Travis to the north.
The city's origins trace to 1962, when three Houston businessmen associated with the Gulfmont Hotel Company obtained an option to purchase a 2,700-acre ranch originally owned by oilman and rancher Jack Josey. The name Lakeway followed the company's naming convention from their Fairway Motor Hotel in McAllen. Construction of the hotel began in October 1962, with the grand opening on July 12, 1963. The Lakeway Land Company was subsequently formed for real estate development. In June 1974, property owners voted to incorporate Lakeway as a 1,200-acre village with Austin's consent.
Today, Lakeway serves its residents through the Lake Travis Independent School District, which operates six elementary schools, three middle schools, and Lake Travis High School. The community is also served by the Lake Travis Community Library, which relocated to its current 11,000-square-foot location in the Tuscan Village area in February 2013. Medical services are available through the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, which opened in April 2012 with comprehensive healthcare facilities and capacity for continued expansion.
