Pflugerville is a city in Travis County, Texas, with a small portion extending into Williamson County. The 2020 census recorded a population of 65,191, making it a growing suburb of Austin and part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city takes its name from German settlers who began farming the area in 1849, starting with Henry Pfluger Sr., a wealthy farmer from Germany who had lost his property during the revolutions of 1848. The community developed significantly after the Civil War, with a school and Lutheran church established in the 1870s. A general store opened in 1890, and the post office began operations in 1893. The arrival of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad in 1904 sparked rapid growth, and the town was officially platted that same year. By the early 1920s, Pflugerville had about 500 residents. The community faced decline during the Great Depression and post-World War II era but survived despite population losses. Following its incorporation in July 1965, the city experienced steady growth, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s as Austin's population expanded into surrounding areas. This suburban boom transformed Pflugerville into one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas during the late twentieth century.
