Railroad tycoon Jay Gould identified an opportunity to build a direct line between Austin and San Marcos through the private lands of Fergus Kyle and Anne Moore. After reaching an agreement, the Kyle and Moore families deeded 200 acres to the railroad in exchange for one dollar. The Texas Land Company then plotted the town, filing official plans with the county clerk on September 7, 1880. The first lot auction took place on September 25 under the historic Auction Oak, with the railroad providing free rides and food from Austin to attendees. The town quickly attracted residents and businesses from nearby communities, with the population exceeding 500 by 1883 and surpassing 700 by the first census.
Kyle was incorporated in 1928 and gained national attention in 1937 when Mary Kyle Hartson, daughter of Fergus Kyle, was elected mayor by write-in vote.
