The area has supported human habitation for at least 10,000 years. At the time of European contact in the 1670s, the region fell within territory occupied by the Little Osage people and was likely used as hunting grounds.
Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the Osage treaty of 1825, American settlers from eastern slave states arrived beginning in the 1830s, drawn by the rolling prairie, fertile soil, streams, and timber. William Bullitt Howard arrived from Kentucky in 1844 with his family and slaves, while Pleasant John Graves Lea became a prominent resident. The Civil War brought significant upheaval to the community, and in its aftermath, Howard negotiated with the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company to plat a town along the railroad route. The town was founded as Strother in October 1865 and renamed Lee's Summit three years later, likely in honor of Pleasant John Graves Lea, who was killed during the Civil War.
Beginning after World War II, Lee's Summit transitioned from an agricultural community into a suburban commuter town. Today the city features a well-funded school district, an Amtrak station, man-made lakes, and numerous parks.
