Lufkin is the largest city and county seat of Angelina County, Texas, situated in Deep East Texas approximately 60 miles west of the Louisiana state line. With a population of around 34,000 people as of 2024, the city has grown from humble beginnings into a vibrant community.
Founded in 1882 as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, Lufkin was named for Abraham P. Three prominent lumbering families—the Kurths, the Hendersons, and the Wieners—founded the Angelina County Lumber Company in 1890, which became the foundation for the lumber industry throughout East Texas. At the height of their operations, nearly a dozen sawmills and related industries flourished in the area.
When the timber boom eventually ended, Lufkin entered a golden era of expansion marked by industrialization and modernization. The opening of Lufkin Industries and Southland Paper Mill diversified the local economy.
