Maitland is a suburban city in Orange County, Florida, and part of the Greater Orlando area with a population of 19,543 according to the 2020 census. Named for Fort Maitland and Captain William Seton Maitland, who died in the Second Seminole Indian War, the city is one of the oldest incorporated suburban municipalities in central Florida. The town was originally incorporated as Lake Maitland in 1885, becoming the third town incorporated in Orange County, and took its present city status in 1959. During the closing decades of the nineteenth century, the area thrived in citrus production. The town's character changed dramatically in the mid-1920s when Orlando's suburban sprawl brought rapid modernization and growth through new construction.
Today, Maitland spans 6.4 square miles and features twenty-one lakes, with Lake Maitland being the largest at 451 acres.
