Mekoryuk is a small city on Nunivak Island in the Bethel Census Area, located 30 miles west of the Alaska coast in the Bering Sea. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 206 residents. The island itself has a much longer history, having been inhabited for 2,000 years by the Nunivak Cup'ig people. When Russian explorers from the Russian-American Company first arrived in 1821, they found 400 people living in 16 villages across the island. The modern community began to take shape in the 1930s with the construction of an Evangelical Covenant Church, followed by a school in 1939. These institutions drew residents from elsewhere on the island, making Mekoryuk the sole permanent population center. Reindeer herding arrived in 1920 and was later purchased by the U.S. government in the 1940s, with a slaughterhouse built in 1945. The government also introduced 34 musk oxen from Greenland in 1934, a conservation effort that succeeded remarkably; today the herd numbers around 500. The 1950s and 1960s brought significant changes, including the construction of Mekoryuk Airport in 1957 and a high school in 1978. The city was formally incorporated in 1969.
