In the 1850s, American settlers of English, German, and Irish descent arrived to farm the fertile lands, followed in the 1870s and 1880s by Portuguese sharecroppers from the Azores. The city was incorporated in 1954 and experienced rapid growth from the 1970s through the 1990s due to Silicon Valley's technology boom, becoming a major hub for manufacturing and corporate offices.
