New Almaden, located in the Capitancillos Hills of South San Jose, is home to California's oldest and one of the nation's most productive mercury mines. Long before European settlement, the indigenous Ohlone people recognized the value of the area's cinnabar, a bright red mercury ore, which they used in paint production. Mexican settlers discovered the mines in the 1820s, with Secundino Robles making the initial discovery in 1824. The mines were later named "Nuevo Almadén," meaning "the mine" in Spanish, after a historic mercury mine in Almadén, Spain that had operated since Roman times.
Captain Andres Castillero of the Mexican Army obtained the mining grant in 1846 but soon sold it to Barron, Forbes Company, an English textile firm based in Tepic, Mexico. After years of legal disputes over land claims, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed Castillero's claim in 1863. That same year, President Abraham Lincoln attempted to seize the mine, but armed miners prevented federal agents from entering. Concerned about California's loyalty during the Civil War, the federal government withdrew, allowing Barron, Forbes Company to sell the operation to American investors for $1.75 million.
The mines operated for 135 years, extracting over 83 million pounds of mercury before Santa Clara County purchased and closed them in 1976. Today, the historic mining area is accessible through Almaden Quicksilver County Park, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Scattered throughout the 4,147-acre park are remains of miners' housing, English Camp, and other structures from its productive past.
