Sunnyvale is a city located in the Santa Clara Valley in northwestern Santa Clara County, California. The Ohlone people originally populated the Santa Clara Valley before Spanish arrival in the 1770s brought devastating diseases that decimated their population. In 1843, Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas was granted to Francisco Estrada and his wife, with portions later developing into Sunnyvale and Mountain View. Martin Murphy Jr. purchased nearly five thousand acres of this land in 1850, establishing the Bay View ranch and wheat farm. As wheat farming became uneconomical in the 1870s, fruit orchards took its place, and by 1886, Santa Clara County earned the nickname "Garden of the World."
The town was originally named Encinal by developer Walter Crossman in 1897, but residents changed it to Sunnyvale on March 24, 1901, to attract newcomers seeking sunny weather. The city officially incorporated in 1912. Early industry included Libby, McNeill & Libby's fruit-packing factory, established in 1906, and the Joshua Hendy Iron Works, which relocated to Sunnyvale that same year. Today, Sunnyvale has evolved into a major center of Silicon Valley's technology industry.
