Milton is a town in northern Chittenden County, Vermont, with a population of 10,723 as of the 2020 census. The town was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire on June 8, 1763, and first settled in February 1782 by William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor, and Thomas Dewey. By 1795, approximately 300 settlers called Milton home. The town's name most likely originated from William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam, who held the title Viscount Milton and supported colonial independence during the American Revolution.
Milton's early economy centered on lumber and potash production until 1840, when dairy farming became popular. Farmers began selling butter and cheese locally, and eventually milk was shipped to Boston and New York. The town built its Town House in 1849, though it was destroyed by fire in 1878. From 1965 to 1988, Milton was home to Catamount Speedway, a racing facility that launched the careers of several prominent drivers, including Kevin Lepage.
