Moccasin is an unincorporated community in Tuolumne County, California, situated at the intersection of State Routes 49 and 120, on the shore of Moccasin Reservoir at the edge of Lake Don Pedro. The town is home to a State of California Resources Agency Department of Fish and Game fish hatchery. Perhaps California's last company town, Moccasin is almost entirely owned by the City and County of San Francisco. Homes housed employees of the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power system, with most visitors arriving to work on the project. The community has no stores or gas stations, and most buildings are painted the same color, giving the homes a uniform appearance.
During the Gold Rush era, Moccasin was a stagecoach stop on Big Oak Flat Road, with a covered bridge crossing Moccasin Creek during wet seasons. Mining camps operated along Moccasin Creek and east of town near Priest Grade, though robberies were frequent during years of successful mining activity. Construction on the original Moccasin Powerhouse began in Fall 1921 and was completed August 14, 1925. Designed by San Francisco architect Henry A. Minton and assembled by electrical engineer Paul James Ost, the facility operated until February 7, 1969. The present-day powerhouse was completed and placed in operation January 27, 1969, with a rated capacity of 100,000 kVA. A second generator, the Moccasin Low Head Generating Plant with 3,000 kVA capacity, was completed in 1986. In July 2006, a fire near Moccasin Powerhouse burned 1,998 acres, requiring 40 engines, 4 helicopters, and 9 bulldozers at a cost of three million dollars.
