During the early twentieth century, North Augusta flourished as a vacation destination for northerners, drawing visitors through its railroad connections and pleasant climate. The Hampton Terrace Hotel, a luxury resort opened by the Jackson brothers in 1903, significantly boosted the city's economy by welcoming affluent seasonal guests until fire destroyed it on December 31, 1916.
The city experienced dramatic growth during the mid-twentieth century following construction of the Savannah River Plant nearby. This development prompted the city's population to nearly quadruple, and its area expanded from 772 acres to 5,139 acres.
