Orick is a census-designated place situated on the banks of Redwood Creek in Humboldt County, California, located 43 miles north of Eureka. The name derives from the Yurok word O'rekw, meaning "mouth of the river." The Yurok people established 74 known villages in the area, with O'rekw as one of five locations where jumping dances were held. Non-native settlement began with the Gold Rush in 1850 following the discovery of Humboldt Bay. While miners were drawn to claims in the Trinity region, local settlers also worked five beach sand mining claims in the Gold Bluff District, though these proved unproductive and the gold rush ended by the 1870s. The first post office opened in 1887, and a wagon road connecting Eureka and Crescent City was completed in 1894. A bridge built in 1903 replaced Swan's Ferry for crossing Redwood Creek. The Orick Inn, built by Elmer L. Devlin after the original structure burned in 1918, became known for hosting notable guests including President Herbert Hoover and opera singer Madame Ernestine Schumann-Heink. The Redwood Highway reached Orick in 1924, bringing tourists to see the giant redwoods. After World War II, Orick became a lumber and timber mill town until mills consolidated in larger towns and Redwood National Park was established. Today, Orick is notable for its large herds of elk visible from the road, and rare minerals orickite and coyoteite were discovered at nearby Coyote Peak. The 2020 census reported a population of 328.
