Peekskill is a city located in northwestern Westchester County, New York, about thirty-five miles north of New York City. Situated on a bay along the east side of the Hudson River, the city was established as a village in 1816 and incorporated as a city in 1940. According to the 2020 census, Peekskill had a population of 25,431, making it the third-largest municipality in northern Westchester County.
The area's name comes from Jan Peeck, an early New Amsterdam resident who established trading contact with the Lenape people known as the Sachoes. After Peeck set up his trading post at a creek, the waterway became known as Jan Peeck's Kill, which eventually gave the city its name. The Ryck's Patent Deed of April 21, 1685, formally documented these early agreements and transactions.
During the American Revolution, Peekskill became an important manufacturing center for the Continental Army. The city established Camp Peekskill in 1776, which contained barracks and redoubts. Local mills powered by creeks and streams produced gunpowder, leather, planks, and flour, while docks along the river facilitated the shipment of fresh meat from slaughterhouses. In early spring 1777, a British invasion force attacked and overwhelmed Camp Peekskill, forcing American defenders to retreat north after destroying the barracks and wharf. The site was later preserved as Fort Hill Park.
