Rockwall is the county seat of Rockwall County in northeastern Texas, located on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard approximately twenty miles northeast of Dallas. More recently, Caddo Indians inhabited the region, followed by Creek Indians in the early nineteenth century. Anglo-American settlement began in 1851 when the first settlers arrived and began digging wells, during which they discovered the underground rock walls. Initially believing these formations to be man-made, later geological and archaeological study revealed them to be natural features. The town of Rockwall was officially established on April 17, 1854, and named after these rock walls. Originally part of Kaufman County, Rockwall became the county seat when Rockwall County was formed in 1873. Today, the city spans 31.6 square miles and is served by multiple state highways and Interstate 30, supported by education facilities including the Rockwall Independent School District and a Higher Education Center affiliated with Collin College.
