Spring Valley is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, east of San Diego along State Route 94. It takes its name from the natural spring that shaped early settlement in the valley, and long before American settlers arrived, the Kumeyaay people lived in the area.
The community's most famous landmark is a small adobe ranch house built in the mid-1800s by A.S. Ensworth, using curved timbers salvaged from the Clarissa Andrews, a coaling hulk formerly owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. In 1865, Captain Rufus K. Porter moved his family into the adobe and added rooms to both ends. Twenty years later, in 1885, the pioneering historian Hubert Howe Bancroft bought the ranch. Bancroft was a noted collector as well as a writer, and the University of California purchased his 60,000-volume book collection in 1905.
Bancroft assembled more than 500 acres of farmland, which he called Helix Farms, and experimented with olives, citrus, almonds, date palms, and other crops, contributing to early agriculture in East County. He is traditionally credited with writing part of his History of California there, and the ranch was his home from 1885 until his death in 1918. The Bancroft Ranch House was named a California Historical Landmark in 1958 and a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
